Have a question about Rooftop Tents?
We are here to help. Here are some common questions our customers ask. Still have no idea? Flick us an email cullum@steezykiwi.com
What is a Rooftop tent
A rooftop tent attaches to your vehicle’s roof racks, trailer, canopy, or tub rack, and folds out into a raised sleeping space (tent). Elevated off the ground, they offer comfort and convenience, with setup times ranging from just 30 seconds to 5 minutes. Here is why you would have one
- Store bedding inside tent while traveling (freeing up room in the vehicle)
- Superior wind and rain protection compared to a traditional ground tent
- Elevated sleeping keeps you clear of animals, insects, mud, and water
- Enjoy better views and increased airflow than camping at ground level
- Stays cleaner — less dirt, sand, and debris than a standard tent
- No need to hunt for perfectly flat ground to set up
- Rocks, roots, sticks, and muddy sites are no longer an issue
- More affordable and far more compact than caravans, trailers, or motorhomes
- Can be left mounted year-round, giving you an instant campsite anytime, anywhere
- Optional annex (for soft shells) and awning provide extra shade, shelter, and privacy ready for comfortable camping almost anywhere.
Will Steezy kiwi tents handle New Zealand's wild/unpredictable weather?
Yes, we have genuinely tested our tents in loads of wild weather through out New Zealand, and they handle very well. Many customers can't believe how amazing they are, even when caught out in winds of over 100 km/h (please don't try this, but occasionally it happens).
Where can I get it installed? And how long does it take?
We offer free installations and free "how to set it up" demos here in Rotorua. We can also point you in the direction of some epic camp spots if coming down for a night or two. We want to make sure you feel confident when driving out and you feel that it is done properly.
Are they hard to install?
Hardshell rooftop tents generally take about 15 minutes and soft shells generally take about 1 hour to install from the box. We supply you with instructions and videos to make it as easy as possible. Cullum is always a phone call away if you get stuck.
Do you ship New Zealand wide?
Yes, we will ship it to your nearest Team Global Express Depot, where you can collect it from. The shipping rates are subsidised by us, as we understand not everyone lives in Rotorua.
Is a rooftop tent a great alternative when compared to a van?
Rooftop tents are a smart alternative to a campervan — more affordable, easier to store when not in use, and they let you turn the vehicle you already own into a capable adventure setup. Your vehicle might also be nicer to drive and better with fuel efficiency.
Cheaper vans can be unreliable and often limit access to places a car or 4WD can easily reach.
Will it fit my vehicle
Our rooftop tents will generally fit most vehicles (we recommend checking with your manufacturer if wooried). We have installed from Toyota yaris and corollas to large 4x4s.
What do I need to attach my rooftop tent onto?
We recommend having roof racks with a minimum dynamic load rating of at least 75kg (this is most roof racks) if going onto roof racks. We also advise staying away from door mounted roof racks, as they can be known to slip back.
Why are rooftop tents so expensive?
Pricing reflects the quality materials, heavy-duty construction and hands-on manufacturing involved
Built with strong metal components and premium fabrics for long-term durability
Designed to withstand harsh weather while providing a safe, comfortable sleeping space
More expensive upfront than a ground tent, but built to last for years
Long-term convenience, reliability, and comfort make it a smart investment
